This review is of the new Optimus Primal, selling quickly and exclusively at Toys R Us. This figure was supposed to be part of the older Beast Machines line, but since it never made it there, Hasbro decided to release it as part of the near ending Robots in Disguise line. Read on to see if you might want to get this huge figure...

Transformation : Optimus Primal here is easy and hard top transform. Simply put, his legs fold back at the knees all the way, and some monkey feet rotate down and around, you flip his chest and robot head down to reveal his monkey chest and head, and you rotate the hands thumbs 180° to give him Monkey hands. There is a little more to it than that, but not much more. Still, a decent transformation that most experienced Transformer toy owners can handle, and new ones will have little trouble learning. Unless you are 5 and have small hands that is - this is one big monkey ;)

Articulation : Here is the real standout of this huge Transformer. Even though one arm has an action feature that limits that arms articulation, the rest is great. From seemingly double jointed knees to fully articulated fingers, this Primal as some punch. The only drawback is that while one arm swivels and bends at the elbow, the other does not because of an action feature. I may even someday get another Primal, and replace the action feature arm with a normal one - just to get better articulation. Still, this Primal is articulated the way most of the new Transformers are, which is a good thing.

Accessories : Ummm, one little disc that Primal fires from his chest in robot mode, his neck in monkey mode. That's it. Nada, nothing, zip. Of course, this is from Beast Machines, there guns for the good guys were forbidden...so a low score here unfortunately for Primal.

Accessories - 4

Painting and Design: Well, another stand out section for Optimus here. He looks awesome at his nearly foot tall stance (in robot mode) and great in monkey mode too. The attention to his paint application is nice too, with tons of color in his design. Add to this great monkey his voice chips, which have the voice of Gary Chalk, the voice actor who portrayed Primal in Beast Wars and Beast Machines, and you have one well designed and neat looking figure. My only problem is that they have Primal saying "The seeds of the future lie buried in the past." I thought we had gotten rid of Transformers Yoga : The next generation of Transformers. Oh well - still a decent score for overall design here.

Painting and Design - 9

Overall

A TRU exclusive that was, or still may be, available on Amazon.com, that is well worth the price of $29.99 to most Transformer fans. Optimus Primal here is big, great looking, and has Gary Chalk's voice to boot. If you have the shelf space, I say grab him. If you are an Optimus collector (Like I am, see last pic in this review), get him. If you are just t a casual Transformer fan who likes the vehicles instead of monkeys, pass on him. But I am glad I got him :)
