Alright - so what the heck is a "Staction" figure you might ask? Is it a statue? Is it a figure? Is it a ham sandwich? All this will be revealed. You know the drill, read on to find out…
Back in 2002 and 2003, there was a renaissance of sorts, one
with great 80's toys properties coming back into the collections
of young and old alike. It was a chance for fathers and sons
to play with the same toys from their youth; for mothers and
daughters to share in brushing a little pony's hair; a time
of comeback and nostalgia. This was very evident in the toy
line Mattel decided to bring back - Masters of the Universe.
He-Man was back, and stronger than ever. With a great assortment
sculpted by the Four Horseman (great bunch of guys, by the
way), a new cartoon on Cartoon Network, and a whole slew of
product coming out, it seemed He-Man would be around a long
time. Then it happened….Mattel felt as if every assortment
needed a bajillion versions of He-Man and Skeletor, causing
the collector and child alike to lose interest. Slowly the
renaissance died, and the He-Man toy line with it.
Fast forward a couple years and today we see the fruit of
one group's love for the line coming to fruition. The Four
Horsemen, those great guys who sculpted the line and were
huge fans of the MOTU property, worked out a deal with NECA
(or NECA worked out a deal with them, who knows), along with
Mattel, and the "Staction" figure was born. With all sorts
of great designs for figures all ready to go, the Four Horsemen
weren't going to stop putting them out. So with NECA along
for the ride, we now have these pieces for our MOTU collection.
So what is a "Staction" figure? Well, it is a statue, with
no poseability, that is in perfect scale with the toy line
it stems from. Hordak here, featured in this review/feature,
is in scale with the now defunct Mattel MOTU line of a couple
years ago. Sure, you can't pose him without breaking the figure,
but he looks great already and posed next to He-Man, Skeletor,
or the rest of the gang from Eternia, he looks just right.
As an added bonus, as a statue he has more paint detail and
an overall improved intricate design, creating a true piece
for anyone's action figure and/or statue collection. Overall,
I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of this figure/statue,
and cannot wait to pick up the other two in this wave, Snout
Spout and Clawful (though in my mind he will always be Lob-Stor).
The Four Horsemen have - in my eyes - saved a line from the
jaws of retail death, and given some people a means to flesh
out their He-Man collection.
Bottom Line
Bottom line is this - at $19.99, these Staction figures are
not exactly cheap, but adding one or two at a time isn't too
bad either. Hordak, as the premiere figure/statue from this
first wave really stands out in my opinion, and for any true
MOTU fan, a must have. I found mine at Suncoast, so check
stores like Suncoast, Sam Goody, Media Play, or even your
local comic shops. I highly recommend this piece to any MOTU
fan, and even statue fans in general…it is truly a masterpiece.
