Creepy looking - check. Erie red eyes - check. Very poseable - check. New figure from Marvel Legends line - check. Who could this be? Why Ultimate Man-Thing of course, one of the coolest figures form the legends line in a while. So what makes this figure cool and creepy at the same time, read on to find out…
By far, Man-Thing from the Marvel Legends line has to be one
of the best sculpted and most detailed figures to date. Looking
at this guy, I can't fine one nook, one cranny, one crevice
that isn't racked with a swampy styled detail of some kind.
Each limb and piece is uniquely sculpted, with not one piece
being a mirror reflection of another, like most Legends figures.
From the startling pointy finger nails, to the individual
tree branches on his back, to the way the eyes are set far
enough in to almost hide them. Its the face though, the almost
sad and disheartened face of a man transformed into something
society may not except that captures the heart of this figure.
That alone makes Man-Thing stand out.
But with all the detail, does this detract from articulation at all? Unlike McFarlane statues and figures, this figure still retains multiple points of articulation, with 3 finger joints on each hand (forefinger, three grouped fingers, and thumb), double jointed elbows and knees, hinged mid-section and twisting waist, and even a ball socket jointed for his head. This poseability allows for multiple poses from funny to scary, all in one figure. Truly a remarkable feat.
Finally there is the base for Man-Thing. It's a small circular base that is detailed to look like part of a swampy river or marsh. Of interest to me is the face that the foot pegs seem to be surrounded by so much sculpted detail it's almost too hard to fit the figures feet in. What is cool is the leaping frog being held up by a string of sculpted water. As a back drop, this works well, but as a figure stand it kind of falls flat. Still, not a piece to throw out with the packaging…
Bottom Line
Bottom line - Man-Thing is a must have for my Marvel Legends
collection, but may not be fore yours. I liked the introduction
of this character in the Ultimate Universe (Spider-Man Team-up
series, I miss that comic….) and this figure truly does capture
the feel and look of the character. One of the harder to find
Series 8 figures, he may or may not be a must have in your
collection. If you don't know the character and are not interested
in owning a highly detailed, poseable, "what McFarlane should
do with his figures" kind of toy, then you can skip Man-Thing.
But if you get the chance to own one, via trade or buying
in a store, I highly recommend you do. He is well worth the
price.
