Well,
this is one review I never thought I would be writing. Sure,
in some near future I might find and buy the regular Legends
Phoenix figure, but although the package is labeled Phoenix,
this is none other than the chase version, the Dark Phoenix.
Needless to say I got this figure home and couldn't wait to
review her. So is she worth all the hype? Read on…
When the Legends Elektra figure came out a few months ago, many collectors liked the figure, but disliked the hip joints for the legs. This female body, however, for Phoenix sports a newly designed hip joint with ball-and-socket movement. This joint, while more pleasing in it's sculpting, is limiting to some of the poses. Sure, the legs go forward a little better, but not as well as this figure's male counterparts in the line. In the upper body, Phoenix has Elektra's style arms and shoulder joints, which to me are a little thin, but usable. Also of note is the neck joint, which is hindered by the sculpting of Phoenix's big hair. Why do all the Marvel Legends females up to this point need big hair? Was there a run on hair spray at the Toy Biz factory?
Enough complaining, now on to the good stuff! The overall look of this figure is amazing. As I posing the figure for her pictures, it was hard to not get a good picture. The paint scheme of dark red, gold, and black, capture perfectly the look from the comics. She looks stunning, especially with her finely crafted base beside or behind her. The base is that of the Phoenix bird itself, rising from the ashes. It has so much detail in it, it is only hurt by the small size of itself (I would have liked it a little bigger ;) ). What I also like is this base has a bottom that folds back 90 degrees and provides 2 holes for hanging this on the wall. This way your Phoenix can hang as a nice display piece on your wall. And by the way, if you have the regular Phoenix or the Dark Phoenix, this figure looks great when posed using the hip hook on the base.
Bottom Line
Bottom Line - With this figure fetching some scalper proportioned prices on Ebay, it may be difficult to afford her. Add to that a very limited case pack from Toy Biz, and she is darn near impossible to find for now. I lucked out finding this in a Kay Bee Toy store recently, and only after I asked the manager if there were any other Marvel Legends Phoenix (regular is what I was expecting) figures in the back. It just goes to show that sometimes when you ask if a store has a toy or figure in the back, they just might have it. I wish luck to all those looking for her, and if you do see her, I highly recommend picking it up. Being a chase figure, if you find her even for as much as $20 to $25, you may want to snag her - but not for much more than that.
