Elusive
as the guy from the comics himself, Deadpool the figure is
one Marvel Legends figure that until recently had eluded my
grasp. After a trade on the RoCUniverse
forums (thanks go out to tomfoolery666 for the trade) I finally
have this hard to come by figure. So was the wait worth it?
Does Wade here bring something different to the collection
shelf? Read on and you will see…
Stemming from a character I know little about, I will be basing this review mainly off that little knowledge and the coolness factor of the figure. I was introduced to him back in the days when I read the first run of X-force, when he faced off against Cable and his team of Mutants. Then he was a assassin for hire…now he is in his own book with Cable, called Cable & Deadpool (how original). The look of the costume from then to now hasn't changed much, and the figure itself captures that look flawlessly I think. From the mix of black to red; the detail of Deadpool's smirky expression coming through his mask; to the harness that holds his guns, swords, and grenades, he looks great. Add to that an interchangeable head of him unmasked (which by the way looks great, but also like Freddy Krueger's son), and you have one cool cat of a figure. Smooth lines with sculpted muscles in the right places really help this figure to just stand out in the crowd that is the Legends collection.
Now with a slick and stylish look, how does his poseability hold up? Sporting the usual double-joints and mid-section joint, he can do just about any pose you need him to do. The only hinderances in the joint system are two things. One is that his shoulders have the joint that takes his arms straight up, like Silver Surfer had. While this is a great joint, it has been done better recently on some Spider-Man and other Legends figures. The other nit-pick is that the great looking harness that houses all his weapons is loose. While I applaud Toy Biz for making it loose, thus making the mid-section joint free to move, it also makes this harness slide around a bit too much, and feel almost ready to break. I would have rather had the harness as part of the sculpted body, and design the joint system around it. But that's only a minor complaint. Otherwise he is just about perfect articulation wise.
Then of course there is the real star of this set, and its not a base for Deadpool, it's a rather odd character, again from X-force, but its latest and run with a whole new team (who soon called themselves X-statix). The little guy is called Doop, and he's green and lovable. Truly the star of this package, Doop stands out as one of the oddest pack-ins to date. He comes with a clear base and adjustable pole, so you can have Doop floating as he does in the comic. No one really knows what the hell Doop is or says, but he is cool nonetheless. Move over Deadpool, I hope you realize people hunt for your figure not for you, but for its real star, Doop.
Bottom Line
Bottom line - Highly sought after by collectors and fans alike, Doop (and Deadpool) from Series 6 of Marvel Legends is worth the hunt, but not at scalper prices. I like the fact Deadpool has a ton of accessories, and that Doop is in the set, but if I couldn't find this figure in a store or work out a fair trade like I did, I wouldn't have sweated it. 'Pool is worth the $8 to $10 bucks you might pay for him in a store, but not more than that. Still, if you want an odd character for your collection, nothing beats Doop - just what the hell is he anyway? Oh, and Deadpool is a nice figure too ;)
