First of all, this movie has received some not-so-nice to downright bad reviews, and I for one didn’t care about those reviews. I usually take what others say about a movie with a grain of salt and make my own decision if I will see and then like a film once seen. I am glad I ignored the bad reviews and went to see “Hop.”
Now don’t get me wrong, this movie is made solely for kids. You don’t have to look really deep for any meaning in this film other than let yourself be that inner child again and enjoy the movie. I saw this movie the Saturday the day after it opened, and of course the theater was packed in with the target audience for this movie, kids, and lots of them. That being said, the kids got what this movie was about, and even through all the kids that were really loud, or laughing at the bad jokes, or even crying because they were cranky, all the kids were into this movie. They laughed, called out scenes they had seen in the trailers, and all went “awwwww” and “boooo” on cue with the action on screen. So for kids, this movie is great! For adults, unless you can turn your brain back to the time you were a kid, you might not enjoy this movie too much.
The movie tells the tail (get it, ‘tail’…) of E.B. (voiced by Russel Brand), son of the Easter Bunny (voiced by Hugh Laurie), wanting to follow his own path and become a world famous drummer, and not follow in his father’s paw prints. Then there is the human Fred O’Hare, who as a child saw the Easter bunny making his delivery one year when he was a kid, and for 20 years, dreamed of the day he might do the same. Both these characters are on a journey to find themselves, and to be who they are destined to be…but would that be a working son like Fred’s dad wants for him? Would E.B.’s fate be to deliver Easter Eggs when his old dad retires? What happens when these two find themselves on these journey’s together? Lots of good silly humored fun for all ages.
The movie itself plays a lot like “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” which was director Tim Hill’s last big kids flick. Cute cuddly animal meets ever so slacker a guy and they somehow make each others lives better for the meeting. Throw in Fred’s sister, Samantha (played by Kaley Cuoco), who sees the best in Fred, and a Chick who wants to take over Easter, Carlos (played by Hank Azaria), and you have one fun movie.
The plot is straightforward, so I don’t want to give it too much away. Some of the gags included are a ventriloquist song and dance number, showing off James Marsden’s pipes again; Hugh Hefner (his voice at least) and the Playboy mansion having a couple of quick cameos; and even David Hasselhoff being himself, grandiose and silly, in the film. These little throw in’s are sure to help the adults enjoy this film as much as the kids. And for a movie that has only one really gross-out gag (the Easter Bunnies are magical, so they poop Jelly Beans), the rest is just good clean fun.
Would I recommend this as a date movie for a couple going out on a Friday night? Nope, not even close. Would I recommend this movie as a Saturday matinee for some adults wanting a good laugh, sure thing. And would I recommend this movie to parents with their kids and friends from the neighborhood, absolutely! No real dirty jokes, no real harrowing dangers, nothing even really remotely scary at all in the movie, not even someone saying “I want a rabbit’s foot!” If I had kids, this would be a movie I would take them to see as often as we could. And so should you if you have kids.
